Dehydration adversely affects worker productivity, safety and morale. Even mild dehydration reduces cognitive abilities, impacts performance and slows reaction times. This can lead to reduced output and careless work practices which could result in an increase in workplace injuries and illnesses.
Several studies concluded that a dehydration level of only 3% had the same effect of having a blood alcohol content of 0.08%. Thos with a blood alcohol reading of 0.08% were found to be 20% more likely to have an accident in their car therefore it is highly likely that being dehydrated at a very small percentage of 3% would also increase your risk of a workplace accident.
As well as onsite workplace hydration testing we can implement an effective heat stress management program which includes employee training, toolbox talks, and fluid consumption guidelines.
